Kenny Guess, author of The Guess Column, is one of those rare individuals who combines academic credentials with practical experience. A lifelong educator, he retired from the Louisiana Department of Education after 30 years of teaching health and physical education and is currently in his 5th year of teaching physical education in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi.  Kenny has won numerous Physique titles, including Mr. New Orleans, Mr. Gulf Coast and Mr. Louisiana, has judged both AAU and IFBB physique contests and was a contributing editor to the original Iron Man magazine.

The initial Guess Column, entitled “I’ve Had Enough”, appeared in the June, 2006 issue of Natural Champion, and addressed his frustration with years and years of dealing with people who want to take ‘a short cut’ and totally disregard the medical, mental and legal consequences.

In August, 2006, Kenny gave our readers a glimpse of Joe “Tiger” Fontenot, “The Push Up King” – a fourth grade student who can do 30 one arm pushups!  This was one of our most popular articles to date.

Kenny sent us the following update on Joe:

Last year at this time we did a story about a youngster, Joe Fontenot, who did 30 one arm pushups in one of my fourth grade glasses during a pushup contest that I do each year.   This is an update on Joe, including a little about his life at home.  Remember that his family, along with so many others in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi and along the Gulf Coast suffered major damage or total destruction of their homes and property during Hurricane Katrina in 2005.  Joe is making the grade in class and will be moving on to middle school next year.  He has been selected as "Tiger of the Day" (an honor given to a student that shows outstanding character) several times this year and also has been selected as a "Terrific Kid" which is an honor given to a student that shows outstanding character each month.  Joe was the winner of my pushup contest this year.  He did 47 regular pushups, beating his closest competition by 10!  At the time this is written we have not had our 'one arm' pushup contest but I feel sure Joe will surprise everyone again.  I went by his home last week and his parents, Harold and Donna, took me through their home showing me what they have done and plans for completion.  This is a hard working family and they have done a tremendous job with the rebuilding.  Yes, Joe has done his share of the work along with chores that he completes with no complaints.

Everyone at my school tht has had the pleasure to know and work with Joe will miss him this next year.  I look forward to keeping in touch with him and watching his athletic progress for I believe he will go after his goal of becoming a football player and will be very successful at it.

In October, 2006, Kenny penned “The Force, or Dark Side” in which he took a look at the temptations of steroids and other performance enhancing drugs.

We’re extremely fortunate and honored to have Kenny Guess as a guest writer and editor and definitely look forward to more from him in our second year at
