The Role of Supplements and Ergogenic Aids

15 Sep 2006

Nutritionally speaking, in an ideal world we would get all the essential nutrients, in the correct amounts and ratios, on a daily basis from a perfectly balanced diet. But in the real world, very few people, even elite athletes, consume anything close to a perfectly balanced diet, and the majority of people are actually deficient in any number of macro nutrients. For example, studies show that less than 10% of all males in the U.S. regularly consume the recommended daily servings of fruit and vegetables and that 2/3 of all adults consume less than the RDA for certain vitamins and minerals. Moreover, nitrogen retention tests indicate that many athletes, both those engaged in endurance and those strength sports, are deficient in protein.

For these and other reasons we feel that food supplements and ergogenic aids such as vitamin and mineral supplements, protein powders and liquids, growth factors, energy substrate enhancers, essential fatty acids, joint and connective tissue support formulations, recovery optimizers, cell volumizers, etc. can play a key role in the natural athlete’s quest for better performance.

Supplements offer a number of benefits including:

*Nutrition ‘insurance’. The proper supplementation program can eliminate nutrient deficiencies and provide a constant pool of vital nutrients to the body.

*Convenience. Vitamin and mineral supplements, protein and meal replacement powders, and performance enhancement packets can be quickly consumed and easily carried to work, school, or while traveling.

*Precision Nutrition. With supplements you eliminate guesswork of estimating exact calories, grams and nutrient percentages.

*Quick and efficient absorption. Protein and meal replacement drinks are quickly and efficiently absorbed and utilized by the body.

*Specific concentration or nutrient density. The best supplements are designed to provide concentrated amounts of nutrients and performance enhancing aids without extra and unnecessary ingredients.

One important point we’d like to stress: Supplements are just what the name implies – substances meant to supplement a good daily diet. Without the proper amount of protein, high quality carbohydrates, essential dietary fats, vitamins, and minerals, even the best of supplements cannot do the job for which they were designed.
